New film’s journalist and you can manager, Robert Rossen, creates a great multidimensional chess video game, to have mortal bet, anywhere between Johnny, their manager (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s spouse (Ellen Received), a great cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you may a beneficial scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whose sis (Nina Foch) worked within local casino and you can dated an effective corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). This new caustically epigrammatic software, new cast’s suavely managed body language out of love and you can possibility, and you may Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and you can fashionably cocky pictures (as well as his governmental conscience) make this pugnacious yet in depth spectacle a low profile vintage of your style.” [ ten ]

Although the spot observe a familiar development, the brand new characterizations is actually new in addition to activities good enough in order to overbalance. Dialog is terse and relevant, preventing the sentimental, phoney contact. Unusual cam bases arrive on occasion so you can intensify attention and momentarily stop the attention. Good teamplay of the Robert Rossen, doubling because the director-scripter, and you will Milton Holmes, brand spanking new copywriter and you may member music producer, along with helps with rendering it a mellow design.” [ 11 ]

Its mostly a matter of viewing Mr. Powell read their paces stylishly when you find yourself a massive throw from actors and you may stars give him vintage service. Evelyn Keyes performs the good absolutely nothing lady whom brings out the new finest in him and you can Ellen Drew ‘s the smooth and you may slinky vixen just who will get him on the jams. Thomas Gomez are oily as the villain and Lee J. Cobb really does a different sort of in a position tour given that an exhausted cops inspector who ultimately shuts the outcome. A lot of sipping and you may smoking is completed because of the all the worried.” [ several ]
